What drives us?

Anthropology studies underlying motivations, cultural meanings and beliefs. To comprehend these I use qualitative research methods.

Through ethnography I immerse myself in peoples life worlds, to gain insights in their cultural perspectives. Ideas about the self versus the other, cultural perceptions of gender and embodiment are concepts that aren't conscious yet shape our daily thoughts and actions. During in-depth interviews I connect with people one-on-one to gain insights in cultural and personal motives. Audiovisual methods allow me to incorporate sensorial experiences of seeing, hearing and feeling in my reporting.

This results in the publication of hybrid articles. Recently my masterthesis "Lloret '18" was published alongside the article "What happens stays: reflections on doing camera based research in Lloret de Mar" in Journal of Festive Studies. In "Displays of Vanity on Instagram: A reflection on the Making of Instaworthy" we questioned the vanity of selfies in anthropological magazine Etnofoor:
